US Sales Tax by State (2025)
Sales tax in the United States varies significantly by state. Oregon, Montana, New Hampshire, Delaware, and Alaska have no state sales tax. Tennessee and Louisiana have the highest combined rates at around 9.5-9.6%.
State vs. Local Sales Tax
Many states allow local governments (counties, cities) to add their own sales tax on top of the state rate. This is why the "average combined" rate is often higher than the base state rate. For example, Illinois has a 6.25% state rate but an average combined rate of 8.83% due to local additions.
Reverse Sales Tax Calculation
If you know the total price paid (including tax) and want to find the pre-tax price: Pre-Tax Price = Total / (1 + Tax Rate). For example, a $108.25 total at 8.25% tax means the pre-tax price was $108.25 / 1.0825 = $100.00.
